When her last living relative dies, Christine decides to leave Yorkshire and tour Kent for a couple of weeks. As she approaches Thorpe Manor, she feels the name seems familiar. Then she has to swerve suddenly to avoid a black dog. The car crashes into a grassy verge where Christine bangs her head and blacks out. When she awakens, she finds herself in the regency England of 1811 and wearing an outfit from that period.
