On her first day at Medway General Hospital, Patty is warned about Martin's reputation, but starts to fall for him anyway. They promise each other they won't date anyone else while he goes away for his exams, but Brenda comes back from two days leave in London and mentions that she saw Martin living it up with a red-head at a night-club. Patty doesn't believe his explanation that they were celebrating after passing their exams, but later accepts his offer to work in the new children's wing at St. Christopher's.
