Spider-Gwen: Smash #1 is a pivotal bridge issue in the Ghost-Spider continuity: writer Melissa Flores uses it to plant the seeds of Gwen Stacy's eventual departure from her native Earth-65 to the 616 mainstream Marvel Universe, a migration that would be completed in the subsequent ongoing series Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider (April 2024). The issue delivers the first full appearance of Earth-65's Dazzler (Alison Blaire-65) — a character whose existence had been teased as far back as Edge of Spider-Verse #2 in 2014 but had never been shown on-panel until now — alongside the debut appearances of that universe's Natasha Romanoff, Rick Jones, and the villain Pink Velvet, meaningfully expanding the Earth-65 cast in a single issue. By grounding Ghost-Spider in her home dimension's rock-music culture rather than in interdimensional adventure, the series also represents a conscious creative effort to return the character to the band-and-drums identity that made her distinctive from her very first appearance.

History

The series was first announced under the title Spider-Gwen: On Tour at Marvel's Women of Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2023, with writer Melissa Flores (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Women of Marvel) and artist Enid Balám (Kate Bishop: Hawkeye) already attached. By August 2023 Marvel had retitled it Spider-Gwen: Smash and added a Peach Momoko foil variant to the cover lineup; the word 'Smash' was noted by press at the time as carrying deliberate Hulk-adjacent resonance, foreshadowing Earth-65's Bruce Banner as a series antagonist. The issue shipped December 13, 2023 with a cover date of February 2024, kicking off a four-issue limited series collected in a trade paperback in August 2024.
