Cannonball, Marvel Man and Firestar are trying to get vital information to the Mutant Liberation Force when they are attacked by Captain Assyria and the Avengers. Wolverine is killed. Nova is confronted by the mysterious Sayge who promises to reveal "the truth" to him: The world is not as it should be. In the Biblical exodus, Moses was defeated and killed. Egypt has remained the chief power in the world. Caucasians are discriminated against and mutants have been hunted. With the mutants rebelling, the Sphinx decides the time has come to assert total control of her world.
