“Désolation”

In "Désolation," the X-Men confront Sauron, only to see him revert to his human form, Karl Lykos—whose past is tied to a darker history in the Savage Land. With Ka-Zar arriving to recount the awakening of the ancient Garokk, the team faces a growing crisis as the jungle itself begins to shift, trapping them beneath a wall of ice. Written by John Byrne and Chris Claremont, with art by Byrne and inks by Terry Austin, this issue captures the X-Men at a turning point, where the wilds of the Savage Land become as dangerous as any enemy. The cover by Jean Frisano captures the isolation and dread of the frozen landscape.
