A man named Clark Taylor is accused of shooting Tom Howard at a wedding reception out of jealous revenge, and is jailed awaiting trial. Sheriff Lassiter and others doubt Taylor's guilt, suspecting instead that the real culprit is a smooth-talking life insurance salesman who operated from an office in town. When the group discovers a wagon train has mysteriously exploded on the prairie—the same night as the shooting—they realize the incidents are connected and work to prove Taylor's innocence before he faces execution.
