Lash LaRue becomes entangled in a scheme when he deliberately provokes a quarrel with the local sheriff and gets himself arrested for disorderly conduct, earning six months hard labor. His plan is to gain access to a road camp where he suspects criminal activity is occurring involving stolen specimens and tools. At the camp, Lash discovers that the road contractor is involved in a plot, and he works to expose the crime while maintaining his cover. The story culminates with Lash and fellow heroes Rocky Lane and Smiley Burnette confronting a gang of palefaces who have kidnapped an Indian chief and are plotting an ambush, leading to a dramatic rescue involving a train and gunfire near Blackstone Pass.
