“Who Needs You?”

In "Who Needs You?", Stan Lee and Steve Ditko deliver a tense, thought-provoking tale from 1975, where a human general is replaced by a coldly logical robot meant to handle the ultimate decision of nuclear retaliation. When an unidentified object streaks toward Earth at ICBM speed, the robot prepares to launch a counter strike—only for the general to recall a forgotten satellite and intervene just in time. The cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers captures the moment’s urgency, while Ditko’s precise art and Lee’s sharp script make this a standout issue in the Alan Class run.

A general who has the responsibility of launching a nuclear counter attack is replaced by a robot that his bosses think is more suited for a role that requires perfection. When an unidentified radar object approaches at ICBM speed, the robot concludes that it must be a Soviet first strike and prepares to launch a counter attack. The general remembers a satellite that was launched years ago and was expected to re-enter the atmosphere soon. He disconnects the robot before it can push the button. His grateful superiors reinstate him.
