The fourth volume of Zidrou and José Homs's Shi series arrives with one of the most arresting images in the run: an enormous sea creature — its vast, clawed hands cradling two women amid the flooded canals of what appears to be Venice — looms against a brooding teal sky, a great domed basilica glowing ominously in the background. Homs's painted linework gives the scene a dreamlike, almost Renaissance quality, balancing grandeur and dread in equal measure. Subtitled "Victoria," this 2020 Dargaud installment promises that the series' blend of mythic scale and intimate human drama is very much alive.
