The mismatched duo of Shelton and Felter steps into the gaslit shadows of a moody period streetscape, where a rangy cat perches atop a molasses barrel and a discarded newspaper hints at trouble brewing in the city. Jacques Lamontagne's cover work sets a richly atmospheric tone — cobblestones, early automobiles in the background, and a lantern's warm glow against the night sky all promise a detective yarn with real old-world flavor. La Mort Noire ("The Black Death") is an inviting opener for this French-language series, pairing an oddly charming odd couple against what looks to be a very dark mystery indeed.
