Sgt. Rock: The Prophecy #6

Joe Kubert's cover for this finale of his six-part miniseries is a quietly devastating image: Sgt. Rock, laden with ammunition bandoliers and rifle, glances back with a weathered, battle-hardened expression at the soldiers marching behind him, while in the foreground a lone helmet rests on a rifle — the universal battlefield symbol of a fallen comrade. Kubert's warm sepia tones and masterful sketchy linework give the whole composition the feel of a living battlefield sketch, worn and immediate. It's a fitting visual capstone to a WWII story told entirely by one of the form's great craftsmen.
