Träskmonstret tänker tillbaka på hur han blev till. Forskarparet Alec och Linda Holland flyttar in i sitt nya hem/laboratorium i träskmarkerna. Brottsorganisationen Konklaven besöker dem och försöker tvinga av dem deras forskningsresultat. Paret Holland vägrar och deras hem bränns ner. Linda Holland dör, men Alec får ett framforskat växtmedel över sig och blir Träskmonstret. Träskmonstret dödar männen som startade branden och vandrar sedan ut i träsket.
