Even though her father was French, Julie visits France for the first time with her mother. When their car breaks down, she wanders off and discovers a castle that had belonged to the Duke de Brissac. Julie is shocked because that was her father's surname. Julie meets Gerard and they start a romance until Julie mentions that her father's name was de Brissac. Like everyone else she meets in the town, Gerard starts treating her coldly when they discover her name. Only later does she learn that her father is blamed for giving the Nazis the names of people in the town who were later executed.
