Constable Preston saves Dave from a grizzly. Dave shows Preston a pup (son of Silver Boy, greatest lead dog in the Northwest) that he will give him in one month. Dave's team arrives two days late, alone. Preston finds Dave dead in a canyon, along with the tracks of a pup and a three-toed wolf. Later he meets André Dupré, whose traps are being raided by a three-toed wolf and a puppy. When they find the wolf, it is fighting two lynx. Her adopted pup joins in and is hurled against a rock. The pup is okay. “What a dog you're going to make. A king of dogs! That's what I'll call you--Yukon King!”
