About this Issue

Sentinels #5, titled 'Factory Settings,' is the concluding chapter of writer Alex Paknadel and artist Justin Mason's five-issue limited series — the first Marvel title to build an entirely new cast of nanotechnology-augmented human protagonists around the Sentinel mythos rather than the robots themselves. As the finale of a story that asked whether broken people could stay human while doing monstrous work, the issue delivers on that theme with an unsparing reckoning: Lockstep is effectively lobotomized, Voivod is dead, and the 'villain' Warden Ellis consolidates control of Graymalkin Prison, while Drumfire and Sawtooth survive to become something genuinely new — a hybrid of human and Sentinel tech bonded around the consciousness of Juston Seyfert. Within the X-Men: From the Ashes publishing initiative, the series carved out a morally grey corner of the post-Krakoa Marvel Universe that had never existed before, telling a working-class action story about collateral damage from superhero conflicts rather than the conflicts themselves.

History

Paknadel and Mason — who had previously collaborated with Marvel on Carnage and Spider-Punk respectively — pitched Sentinels as part of the 2024 X-Men line relaunch overseen by editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski and editor Darren Shan, with assistant editor Noah Sharma. The series was announced in June 2024 and launched October 9, 2024, with all five issues released between October 2024 and February 2025. The complete miniseries was subsequently collected in the trade paperback Sentinels: Necessary Monsters (ISBN 978-1302960209), published July 8, 2025.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Issue #5 (story title: 'Factory Settings') is the series finale of the five-issue limited series Sentinels (2024–2025), released February 26, 2025, with a cover date of April 2025.
  • Written by Alex Paknadel; art, cover, and colors by Justin Mason and Federico Blee; lettered by Travis Lanham; edited by Darren Shan.
  • Drumfire (Patricia Pham), Lockstep (Bradley Hansen), Sawtooth (Camila Rivera), Voivod (Dragos Teodorescu), and Shellback (Michael Babineaux) — all members of Sentinel Fireteam — made their first appearances in Sentinels #1 (Oct. 2024); all five appear in this finale (Voivod and Shellback as corpses/references).
  • Issue #5 reveals that Charles Xavier — imprisoned in Graymalkin Prison as its most dangerous inmate — was the source of Drumfire's recurring Onslaught hallucinations, and he provides her with Juston Seyfert's Sentinel as a means of escaping with Sawtooth.
  • Lockstep is possessed by the 'Perimeter' entity and ultimately lobotomized by the end of the issue; Warden Ellis plans to use his body to hunt the now-rogue Drumfire and Sawtooth.
  • The issue concludes with Drumfire, Sawtooth, and the organism that is Juston Seyfert bonding into a new kind of Sentinel entity — an open-ended narrative hook for potential future stories.
  • Lawrence Trask, the precognitive mutant son of Bolivar Trask, ends the series imprisoned and mentally broken in Graymalkin, reduced to prophetic raving under Ellis's control.
  • The entire miniseries was collected in the trade paperback Sentinels: Necessary Monsters (July 8, 2025), collecting issues #1–5; it is part of the X-Men: From the Ashes publishing initiative.
