Charlton's Secret Romance #44 from August 1979 brings together heartfelt drama and the brand's signature romantic sensibility in one warm, eye-catching package. The cover by Su Gumen layers two scenes at once — in the foreground, a couple shares a tender kiss, while behind them two dark-haired women lounge together, one in a yellow bikini and the other holding a plate of cake beside what appears to be a "Just Married" sign. With interior stories written by Joe Gill and illustrated by Charles Nicholas and Vince Alascia, this is a fine example of late-'70s romance comics doing what they did best.
