Captain Joe Tanfield sails his ship the "Grampus" to the Arctic Ocean to hunt whales, but he and he crew find themselves stranded when a whale, impaled by a swordfish, rams their ship's rudder, and they're run aground. After days of desperation another whaler is spotted, and the crew of the "Grampus" is brought aboard. However, the captain of this new whaling ship, known only as the Sea Devil, is a ruthless taskmaster, and works the men to the point of mutiny. When Tanfield approaches the Sea Devil on the crew's behalf, he responds by plotting Tanfield's murder.
