Set against the opulent gardens of the Enlightenment era, this opening volume of Schaduwen der Verlichting frames a quietly charged encounter: a silhouetted figure in a tricorne hat observes a young woman in an orange gown reading a letter beside a cherub statue, the whole scene rendered in warm sepia tones by Richard Guérineau. Writer Alain Ayroles, known for richly layered historical narratives, teams with Guérineau — who handles pencils, inks, and color — to launch "De vijand van de mensheid" with a mood of elegant intrigue.
