Nayland Smith involves Dr. Petrie in his struggle against the forces of Fu Manchu, first by solving the "Zayat Kiss" mystery where men are killed by a poisonous centipede. During this, Petrie is entranced by Karamaneh, who proves to be Fu Manchu's servant. Later, Smith and Petrie head to Limehouse to solve the mystery of dead men with severed fingers. Infiltrating an opium den, the duo wind up face-to-face with Fu Manchu and Petrie nearly suffers the same fate as the other severed finger cases.
