A gunslinger in frontier attire lounges with cool authority in an ornate gilded armchair, pistol in hand, boots crossed on a side table bearing a glass of red wine — while behind her, a grand framed portrait of a mustachioed nobleman surveys the scene with regal detachment. That contrast of rough-edged bravado against opulent European surroundings sets the tone perfectly for "Dans les griffes de Salm-Salm," the second volume of Yann and Félix Meynet's Sauvage from Casterman. Meynet's richly detailed linework and warm color palette make this 2017 album a genuinely pleasurable read just to hold and look at before you even open a page.
