In "Close," Sad Sack desperately tries to convince his superior he’s telling the truth about a sick aunt—so much so that he calls on lightning to strike if he’s lying. When an electrician accidentally shocks him with a live wire, the moment takes a turn neither he nor the reader expected.

In "Hazardous," Sad Sack brushes off Slob’s warnings about smoking, only to accidentally toss his cigarette into an ammo dump—leading to a hospital stay in traction. There, he finally decides it’s time to quit, though his resolve might be tested by the next smoke in the ward.

In "Out of Order," a storm knocks out the power at base, leaving General Rockjaw to enlist the reluctant Sad Sack as a messenger. As the hapless Sack zigzags through the chaos, mistaken orders for the colonel on maneuvers and the general’s wife running errands lead to increasingly tangled misadventures—each page more gloriously confused than the last.

In "Big Shot!", Sad Sack becomes the unintended test subject for a new army zap gun, launching him across camp with chaotic results. As worried officers chase a trail of wreckage through the base and into a garbage dump, they’re left stunned by the unexpected twist of where he actually ended up.

In "Rat Trap," Sad Sack’s attempt to bond with his pet rat takes a bizarre turn when Sarge mishears the conversation and launches a full court-martial—only to be outmaneuvered by a clever civilian lawyer who brings the rat to court. The story unfolds with classic military absurdity, turning a simple misunderstanding into a hilarious legal showdown, all in five pages of deadpan humor.
