“The Great Outdoors”

Poor Sad Sack can't catch a break — George Baker's cover finds the long-suffering everyman getting clobbered between a rumbling Sanitation Dept. truck and a wall, with trash cans clattering every which way in a symphony of "CRASH" and "QUIET." It's a perfectly chaotic snapshot of the lovable loser's luck, and the cover's bold colors and slapstick energy make it easy to see why the series was "loved by millions" by 1952. Issue #21 promises a fun-packed time with "The Great Outdoors," and if the cover is any indication, the great outdoors is anything but peaceful for Sad Sack.
