Bridie lived on an island with her aunt where there had been no men for twenty years. But two weeks earlier, she had rescued a young castaway from the sea. On her eighteenth birthday, her aunt announces they are leaving the island. But her aunt is ill and doesn't want to die on the mainland. Bridie promises to stay with her and Don leaves. Months later, Bridie's aunt dies and Bridie goes to the mainland to see Don, only to discover he is engaged to be married and is the Laird of Clan MacTarn.
