“Jonah the Strong”

In "Jonah the Strong," the aftermath of a temporary miracle hits hard as Dick and Margie face their fears without the wonder drug that once made them bold. With the Palatial Theatre performance looming, Dick’s self-doubt returns—until Cleo’s unexpected kiss on stage reminds him of his own worth. The moment sparks a performance of raw, unguarded talent, while Margie finds her courage too, stepping forward to face Josh. Written by Derek Long and illustrated by Carlos Freixas, this 1958 gem captures quiet triumphs with warmth and precision, its cover by Carlos Freixas perfectly framing the story’s emotional core.

The wonder drug that made timid people brave has worn off for Dick and Margie. They think it is the drug that made them successful. Cleo knows that if Dick fails when he opens at the Palatial Theatre, he will walk out of her life. Just before he begins to play, Cleo walks on stage and kisses him. Realizing that Cleo thinks he is wonderful, even without the drug, Dick plays his trumpet as never before. Seeing what happened to Dick also gives Margie the confidence to seek out Josh.
