Merlin meets a man with one arm and a limp on a park bench in Hyde Park and tells him her story. She had fallen in love with a boy in Newcastle who had worked in her dad's garage. When she told her father they wanted to get married, her father had forbidden it because he said Derek was unreliable. Derek had to leave when her father gave him the heave for stealing from the garage. She had saved all her money to follow him, but when she finally saw him he was kissing another girl.
