Jud takes a train somewhere behind the Iron Curtain, doing research for his latest book, when he sees Lara hurrying toward the train. As a writer, he creates people like puppets and jerks on the strings. He falls in love with Lara, but can't pull the strings as he can in his spy novels despite the fact that Lara wishes he could.
