Mrs. Mead hires Geraldine as her companion, complaining that her family only cares about her money. Geraldine encourages Mrs. Mead's feelings of suspicion. Mrs. Mead’s son Mark, who's attracted to Geraldine, offers to hire a nurse and get Geraldine a good job elsewhere. Geraldine thinks he’s taken the rest of the family’s side against her. Mrs. Mead dies and leaves her fortune to Geraldine. Mark says he was going to propose to Geraldine but has changed his mind. Geraldine admits in court that she influenced Mrs. Mead and renounces her inheritance, but she has lost Mark forever.
