“The Ideal Man”

Charlton's Romantic Secrets #10 delivers the kind of heartfelt domestic tension the romance comics of 1957 did so well — the cover by Dick Giordano and Vince Alascia puts you right in the middle of a charged confrontation, as a stern, uniformed father leans in toward a wide-eyed blonde young woman clutching her pearl necklace, his ultimatum — "Are you going to tell him that you're not seeing him again… or must I…?" — hanging in the air while she can only manage a startled "B-but Dad!" The tight framing and warm lamp light overhead give the scene an intimate, almost suffocating urgency that pulls you straight into her dilemma. With Joe Gill's writing and the interior art team of Charles Nicholas and Vince Alascia behind "The Ideal Man," this is a fine example of Charlton's knack for wringing genuine emotion out of everyday romantic drama.

Helen dates Paul but asks him to stop gambling before they marry. Paul agrees and “the change was startling!” Helen discovers she doesn’t love the new, conservative Paul. She goes on vacation to think things over and meets Gabe, a “domineering, spoiled brute,” who ignores all of her “good advice” about changing his life. Gabe says Helen never loved Paul, she “loved reform, for reform’s sake!” Helen falls in love with Gabe.
