This issue contains at least two stories. "I Was the Good Companion" follows Susan, who after college befriends Betsy Payne despite their different social standings, and later agrees to a Paris trip with Betsy's father—a decision that creates tension when Susan's own father objects and she must choose between the trip and her friendship. A second story involves a woman named Diane who becomes romantically entangled with a man named Peter; after he slaps her during an encounter, he later proposes marriage, but she resists, ultimately agreeing to marry him after he insists he will give her everything she desires as a gentleman.
