Janet’s father has a minor job in a department store and puts on a snobbish front for everyone else. Janet falls for crane operator Ralph but her father thinks he’s not good enough for her. Janet suggests Ralph “aim for something higher” but he doesn’t “want to be an engineer or an executive. I like being a crane operator,” and they break up. Janet takes a job as a waitress in Ralph’s favourite restaurant hoping to see him again, but learns he’s gone to work in South America.
