This issue contains two romantic stories. "Dime Store Sweetheart" follows a poor college student named Carl Billings who becomes determined to outdo Valerie Van Ness, a wealthy girl he resents, by winning the President's Prize for academic achievement. When Valerie unexpectedly begins competing seriously in their final year, Carl ultimately triumphs at commencement, only to discover that Valerie had been trying all along to impress him—and the two reconcile with newfound understanding. "Refugee Romance!" depicts a couple separated during the Hungarian Revolution against communist tyranny, with a man warning his beloved that loving him will get her killed, while flashbacks reveal their shared hardship under communist rule and their love for each other despite the dangers they face.
