Chris waits for Robert to return from being on a Panama ship, but when it docks she learns he is not on board and is being held in Santa Cruz for killing a man in a back street. She decides to earn her passage to Santa Cruz working on another ship, but later learns from another new crew member that it was he who had killed the man, not Robert. He is returning to Santa Cruz to save Robert even though it will mean his own execution. Chris comes to realize that Robert is not the man she thought he was and advises Rodrigo not to give himself up.
