Harry's father and Vivian's sister, who had been seeing each other secretly, are killed in an automobile accident. Harry's family believed Ann had only been interested in Lord Fulton's money. Vivian believed that Ann was being led on by Lord Fulton's promises of marriage. To prevent the scandal that would result if it were revealed that Lord Fulton was seeing a girl half his age, Harry offers Vivian money not to tell the press the truth about the circumstances of the accident.
