“They Laughed at My Sweetheart”

In "They Laughed at My Sweetheart," a lonely high school girl named Alice finds unexpected attention from a traveling circus magician named Campo, whose charm and showmanship pull her into a world far from her quiet life. Drawn into his act with a costume that turns heads, Alice begins to believe she’s special—until the truth shatters her illusions. With heartfelt art by Lee Elias and inks by John Belfi, this poignant tale captures a moment of teenage longing and self-discovery, all rendered in the distinctive style of Jack Kamen’s cover.

Alice is envious of other high school students whose parents are not as boring as hers. She meets circus magician Campo, who puts her in his act in a skimpy costume. Alice thinks Campo loves her, but her reputation in town suffers because of their relationship. She decides to run away with the magician, but he explains he hires a local girl in every town, and Alice means nothing to him. Alice goes home with her parents and things improve between them.
