To pay for the death of Prime and other atrocities against dimensions and universes, Parmy forces Morty to hunt for Rick and return him for punishment, or Morty's own life is forfeit. But where to find Rick, who has escaped to "Fringe Space" a zone outside of reality? He starts by seeking out The Ball Fondlers, fictional mercenary heroes from his favorite TV show. Their meeting does not go well, ending up with Morty killing all four members of the team - who really "didn't exist" anyway. Before moving on, Morty is confronted by a new incarnation of The Vindicators, a hero team killed by Rick.
