History

Return of Wolverine was conceived by Charles Soule and Steve McNiven as the capstone of a trilogy that Soule had been architecting since he wrote Death of Wolverine in 2014, with Soule himself describing the desire for Logan's resurrection to carry the same narrative weight as the death that preceded it. The five-issue limited series was structured as the culmination of the sprawling summer 2018 Hunt for Wolverine crossover, which Soule also largely orchestrated, and was edited by Jordan D. White. Though McNiven was the announced series artist, production realities meant he ultimately pencilled only issues #1 and #5, with Declan Shalvey stepping in to draw the middle three chapters — a split that critics and readers noticed as a visible tonal seam in the collected edition. Marvel released a Director's Cut edition of issue #1 in October 2018, bundling Soule's script draft, inked pages, color pages, and never-before-seen character designs, and offered it as a free digital bonus to readers who purchased the standard issue digitally within its launch window.
