"I Was a Pickup" follows a woman who becomes romantically involved with a man she meets while traveling to Chicago, where she has reluctantly agreed to give up her job and marry him after only six months of knowing each other. When she reaches Chicago six months later, she encounters him at a broadcast theater and learns he has become a master of ceremonies for a "Marriage is a Gamble" program that pairs random audience members for potential romance. Through a series of misunderstandings and encounters at the theater, she discovers his romantic intentions while grappling with her own feelings about their relationship. The story concludes with romantic reconciliation as the two navigate their complicated courtship.
