Quasar #3
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeQuasar #3 is the debut issue for two characters who would become cornerstones of the series' supporting cast and mythology: Kayla Ballantine, who first appears here as Wendell Vaughn's newly hired administrative assistant before later becoming his romantic partner and an inadvertent bearer of the cosmic Star Brand, and the Angler, a dimension-warped villain whose strangeness perfectly embodied Mark Gruenwald's appetite for pushing cosmic weirdness into street-level Marvel settings. The issue also marks the moment Wendell Vaughn formally grounds his cosmic identity in civilian life by establishing Vaughn Security Systems, a detail that set the series apart from other cosmic titles of the era by giving its hero an ordinary day job to lose. Taken together, these introductions accomplish within a single issue what many ongoing series take years to build: a genuine personal stake for the lead character and a recurring threat tied directly to the Marvel Universe's most famous address, Four Freedoms Plaza.
In "Angles Not Found in Nature," Quasar returns to Earth and establishes a security firm with Eon, only to face a new threat when the mysterious Angler infiltrates Four Freedoms Plaza in search of the Nth Projector. With the Torch’s help, Quasar must protect Kayla Ballantine, his new secretary, in a high-stakes showdown that tests both their resolve and their powers. Written by Mark Gruenwald and brought to life by Paul Ryan’s dynamic art, with inks by Danny Bulanadi, colors by Paul Becton, and letters by Janice Chiang, this 1989 issue delivers a tense, character-driven adventure with a cover by Paul Ryan and Danny Bulanadi.

Quasar #3 was written by Mark Gruenwald, penciled by Paul Ryan, inked by Danny Bulanadi, and edited by Howard Mackie under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco, with a cover date of November 1989 and a release date of August 8, 1989. The issue is the third chapter of what Gruenwald envisioned as a personal passion project: his 60-issue run on Quasar was, in his own estimation, the realization of his ambition to write 'his own kind of superhero,' transforming a seldom-used legacy character into a cosmic everyman with a clearly defined role in the Marvel Universe. The first several issues, including this one, were specifically constructed to rebuild Quasar's civilian infrastructure from the ground up — giving him a job, a home base, and now a supporting cast — after the cosmic revelations about his Protector of the Universe destiny established in issues #1 and #2.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Kayla Ballantine (Earth-616), introduced as Wendell Vaughn's new administrative assistant at his freshly founded company, Vaughn Security Systems; she would later become Quasar's romantic partner and an accidental host of the New Universe's Star Brand.
- First appearance of the Angler (Kevin Brackett), the issue's primary antagonist, a dimension-displaced villain who breaks into Four Freedoms Plaza in search of the Nth Projector; his alien-geometry appearance and erratic spatial behavior were a direct product of prolonged extra-dimensional exposure.
- Magma (Jonathan Darque) also appears as an antagonist; Darque is a returning Marvel villain who first debuted in Marvel Team-Up #110 (1981), created by David Michelinie and Herb Trimpe, making this one of his rare post-debut appearances.
- Deathurge appears only in flashback in this issue, having been the primary antagonist of Quasar #2; Reed Richards and Doctor Strange appear in brief cameos.
- The story title is 'Angles Not Found in Nature,' written by Mark Gruenwald with breakdowns by Paul Ryan and finishes by Danny Bulanadi; Paul Ryan and Danny Bulanadi also share the cover credit.
- The issue exists in two editions: a Direct Market version and a Newsstand variant.
- The story was reprinted internationally in Die Spinne #203 (Condor, Germany) and in Grandes Heróis Marvel #37 (Editora Abril, Brazil).
- The Quasar Classic Vol. 1 trade paperback (Marvel, 2012) collects Quasar #1–9, meaning this issue is available in that collected edition alongside the broader early arc of the series.
