Set against a brooding New York skyline — the Empire State Building glowing in the distance — this opening volume of Purple Heart announces itself with hard-boiled style: a gun-wielding man in a dark overcoat and fedora dominates the foreground, while a woman stands behind him and a luxury sedan blazes in a wall of flame in the street beyond. The creative partnership of Éric Warnauts and Raives renders it all with moody atmosphere and a rich color palette that feels equally at home in classic noir and mid-century thriller territory. "Le sauveur" looks like a compelling launch for this Le Lombard series, and the 2019 release is a strong reason to dive into whatever dangerous world these characters inhabit.
