“The Road Not Taken!”

In "The Road Not Taken!", Namor faces a haunting mystery when a desperate warning from Bernhart leads to a tragic accident echoing a childhood trauma. With Bernhart’s final instructions, the Sub-Mariner journeys to Pontus, the ancient tomb of Neptune, to confront Jacqueline and her allies—Dragonrider, Proteus, and the Mad Twins—before returning to Atlantis to learn he may no longer be fit to rule. Written by J. M. DeMatteis and brought to life by Bob Budiansky’s dynamic art and Danny Bulanadi’s sharp inks, this 1984 Marvel classic blends personal stakes with underwater intrigue, all wrapped in a striking cover by Budiansky and Bulanadi.

Bernhart tries to warn Namor about Jacqueline, but he refuses to believe him until, during a scuffle with the police, Bernhart is accidentally shot in the same manner Jacqueline’s father was shot when she was a child. Namor follows Bernhart’s directions to Jacqueline’s lair, Pontus, the tomb of Neptune, where he confronts Jacqueline and her pawns — Dragonrider, Proteus, and the Mad Twins. Upon returning to Atlantis, Namor is informed by Dara that he has been deemed unfit to rule.
