The ethereal moodiness of Emma Ríos's cover for this third chapter of Pretty Deadly: The Rat is genuinely arresting — a solitary silhouetted figure sits amid a pale, cloud-like void, a skeletal death-shadow looming behind her while ghostly reaching hands emerge from below. The muted silver and slate palette, colored by Jordie Bellaire, gives the whole image a dreamlike melancholy that feels entirely its own. Kelly Sue DeConnick and Ríos continue to craft one of Image's most visually distinctive series, and this 2019 installment promises more of the mythic, haunting atmosphere the title does so well.
