Portrait d'un buveur #[nn]
From Dupuis's Aire Libre imprint, this 2019 collaboration between Olivier Schrauwen, Florent Ruppert, and Jérôme Mulot announces itself with a cover that's part theatrical stage, part fever dream — a weathered, open-mouthed man clutching a goblet takes center stage within a rope-framed arch, flanked by anatomical statues, a jolly-roger flag, a cannon, a barrel, and smaller medallion vignettes of ghostly running and gesturing figures. Floating above the scene, a polyhedral die and a procession of blue-robed figures add a quietly surreal charge to the whole composition. The trio's distinctive blue-and-pink palette gives the image the feel of an old master painting filtered through something wonderfully strange.
