“Between Two Fires”

In "Between Two Fires," Martan and Vana—aliens from the peaceful planet Antaclea—arrive in war-ravaged Europe, appalled by the devastation they witness. After reflecting on their own world’s violent past, they flee to America, only to learn at a local theater that Martians have invaded Earth. William Kent’s distinctive art brings the story’s emotional and fantastical contrasts to life, both in the interior pages and on the cover.

Martan and Vana land their magic plane in the heart of war-torn Europe and disgustedly want to destroy them all, but they realize that their own race on Antaclea went through the same thing before they learned to forsake war for peace. Leaving Europe and landing in America, the pair attend a performance at a local theater where news is announced that Martians have invaded the Earth.
