Poppo of the Popcorn Theatre #6
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis issue contains two stories. In the first, Poppo and children help extinguish a fire at a restaurant by riding in a fire truck and rescuing people from an upper floor. In the second story, "Art for Heart's Sake," Poppo is asked by the school principal to take a shop course and produce work to impress parents, and he creates a stack of hammers and nails. The final sequence shows Poppo making special snowballs and sharing them with children, with the Mayor later asking if Poppo will pay for property damage caused by the snowballs.
When Mayor Bissell decides the town needs to keep Poppo around, he arranges for the clown to try out as a fireman at the fire station—but Poppo's enthusiastic misunderstandings about when to ring the alarm bell keep causing chaos at the firehouse. Between accidental false alarms, mix-ups with the Fire Chief's wife, and a string of comedic mishaps, Poppo discovers that even the simplest job can turn into a hilarious mix-up when he's involved.
When Poppo lands a job with the Park Department cutting down a dying tree next to the Park Commissioner's house, what should be a straightforward assignment quickly spirals into comedic chaos—a fallen nest, a wrecked car, a missing lucky hat, and a mischievous squirrel all conspire to turn the job into a disaster. As the tree teeters dangerously out of control, Poppo finds himself literally caught in the middle, trying to salvage the situation before it's too late. Bumpy and Ginger watch helplessly as Poppo's well-intentioned efforts lead to one calamity after another, with the Commissioner's house—and patience—hanging in the balance.
Poppo lands an unexpected gig teaching shop class at Principal Harris's school, where he encourages the reluctant students to build toys and gadgets instead of traditional woodshop projects—much to the principal's horror when parents arrive for an inspection. After a chaotic transfer to the art class, Poppo's unconventional teaching methods turn the fingerpainting lesson into a creative free-for-all that nearly redecorates the entire classroom.
Poppo gets a chance to help out the Sanitation Department by operating a snow plow for Mr. Ruggles, but his well-meaning enthusiasm quickly turns the Mayor's driveway—and then his prized hothouse—into unintended casualties of the job. As the mishaps pile up and Poppo nervously awaits his fate, the Mayor and his staff debate what to do with this tenderhearted troublemaker who just can't seem to catch a break.
