Bud Sagendorf's cover art puts Popeye front and center — squinting with characteristic determination, a can of spinazie (spinach) firmly in hand and a speech bubble declaring "Dat ben ik!" ("That's me!") — a perfectly confident summation of the character himself. With work by both Sagendorf and the original creator Elzie Segar inside, this feels like exactly the kind of retrospective that fifty years of Popeye deserves.
