“Along Came the Elves”

DC's "Magazine of Weird Humor" delivers another gloriously unhinged installment with this December 1975 issue, cover by Basil Wolverton and Jack Adler. That cover says it all: a grotesque, hunched figure with clawed hands and a grimacing mouth crouches in a city canyon of towering skyscrapers, dollar bills and raindrops tumbling down around it — pure Wolverton grotesquerie at its most gleefully unsettling. Inside, Wally Wood handles writing, pencils, and inks for "Along Came the Elves," making this a remarkably concentrated showcase of one master cartoonist's vision.
