On April 21, 2010, five astronauts aboard the Mars probe Aries VII return to Earth after a five year mission. They find Earth had been devastated by nuclear and biological warfare two years earlier, and two peoples exist now -- savages, who are now immune to the diseases that ravaged mankind, and the intelligentsia, or 'domies'. The latter confine themselves inside huge safe domes, where they drain the blood of the savages in their search for immunity to the outside plagues.
