Lucy wanted to make her own way in the world. She had tried politics and now painting without any luck. She asks her father to give her a job at his newspaper, but he wants to discuss it after he gets back from a trip to Scotland. Instead, Lucy goes to a rival newspaper and asks for a job. She is told she must first show she is capable before being given a job. Keeping her eyes and ears open for a story, she sees two men exchanging briefcases and assumes something is going on. Taking the initiative, she follows one of the men to Cairo.
