Andy plans to marry Noel's sister, but tells him that a year ago he had written letters and made promises to a girl in Birmingham. Now the girl is threatening to ruin his law career by releasing his letters if he doesn't marry her. Andy asks Noel to see the girl and try a little persuasion for the sake of his sister. When Noel meets Tessa, she does not deny his accusations, but refuses to discuss Andy with him. They spend more time together and Noel is smitten with her. He finds her personality completely at odds with her threats against Andy.
