Two years earlier Dave had joined the company as an ordinary laborer. But one night a dike overflowed and a boy was brought in badly hurt. Dave was forced to reveal that he was previously a doctor in a big hospital and performed emergency surgery to save the boy's like. He stayed on as the factory doctor and Ruth fell in love with him. She thinks he will propose to her when he returns from picking up Lea, the daughter of one of the owners. But when they return, Ruth is shocked to hear that Dave and Lea are engaged.
